Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
I'll be honest in saying Club Danube doesn't even feature on my list of gyms. I used to be a member there until some pretty shocking incidents.
The showers are communal which is not great but no big deal. However on one occasion, I caught somebody shaving his pubes in the shower and on another day, I saw somebody urinating casually in the shower.
On top of this, I was hospitalized for three days with an acute noro-virus infection after a session at the gym. Since the virus takes about 6-12 hours to develop, I put it down to revolting Club Danube. I wouldn't set a foot in there again after what happened!

No gym - but these public pools look rather big:

Here is a complete list:

I have never been to one so I can't recommend it.

I came to the conclusion that it's better to get a monthly card for swimming pools if you want to swim at 15€, that's how much a year?

Unfortunately I'd also like the gym. Swimming is only part of my workout.....

Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
Hi all,
I am new here in Vienna and I am also looking for a gym. I am not necessarily looking for one with a pool, although it would be nice.
I live in the 6th district soI went to Bodystyle in Webgasse to get a quote. The gym seems fine, it is not very big, but seems to have a quite big range of classes. They also have another studio in Breite gasse where you can also go as a member. There is no pool however...
They charge a start fee of 75 euros and 74 euros per month. I was living in Germany before and had a a nicer gym that charged about half of what Bodystyle does, so I thought it was expensive. Now that I see what the other gyms charge, I realize that it is actually quite cheap...
Is there anyone here who goes there?
Thanks!

Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
The following came from a friend of mine, a long time transplant, 9 years:
Manhattan has a swiming pool. Two locations-- one in the 19th district and one in Brunn am Gebirge. So they aren't central but they are extremely nice facilities and have pools. There are various membership levels/costs and it's chepaer to join in the summer because they run deals. While they don't cater specifically to English-speakers I know that one of the directors of the trainer at the Brunn am Gebirge location is a Brit and other trainers seem to have at least some English skills.

@anna
I use the McFit at Mariahilferstrasse 96, at the U3 zieglergasse exit by webgasse. McFit is a large German fitness chain with a few hundred gyms around Europe.
Anyway It's a very nice gym, open 24/7, loads of equipment and the staff are very friendly and helpfull. It has only been open for a few months, so everything is in good condition. €16.90/month but no pool and no classes. You do have to pay extra for showers though.
If you only need weight & workout machines, i think it's a pretty good deal.

kitcat wrote:I have completely given up swimming laps in Europe. They wonder why the Aussies do so well in swimming - Canberra is 300.000 people, and has at least 3 50m olympic indoor pools, and plenty more outdoor 50m pools. I've heard that they have only 3 50m pools in the whole of Netherlands (18 million people)...!
Don't forget, holland is so tiny we simply have no space for many 50m pools (although I am not sure how many there actually are in my fair country). Still, we do pretty well in swimming in the olympics and other cups, so well done for us with so few pools to practice in
and btw, we have 16.5 million people, not 18
And to get back on topic: any sports, including gyms, are expensive in Austria! I don't understand why the state does put some (or more) money towards sports facilities.

Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
Seeing as I started this thread, I figured I'd finish it too....(at least for me!)
After checking out a few gyms including John Harris and McFit, I ended up signing up to Holmes Place in Boerse. To be honest, they have everything I want plus the added convenience of not having to lug towels around as they provide them for you.
They also have a very nice little pool which is perfect for laps and all the gym equipment is pretty good quality. I also managed to blag four hours of personal trainer time (you usually get just one hour), and I managed to slash the sign-up fee to just 25eur.
Not cheap, but I'll be going at least three times per week so hopefully it works out reasonably at the end.

Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
To piggy-back on this thread, I'm wondering if anyone can help narrow the field of gyms with nice lap pools to gyms with nice lap pools where PEOPLE ACTUALLY SWIM LAPS IN AN ORDERLY FASHION, and don't use the lap pool to make out, chase one another or try to swim four people to a lane, with everyone swimming parallel to one another or diagonally in no discernible pattern instead of in a circle.
I currently have a one-month membership to Holmes Place-Kaiserwasser, which is a nice facility but the pool can be a zoo at times.

Try John Harris, Margaretenplatz. The pool (and the gym) doesn't really get busy and people do swim laps in an orderly manner.

Re: Recommend a nice gym with a pool in Vienna
Hi,
I have become a member of EuroGym in January. They recommend their "hotel fitness" at Hotel Imperial Rennweg for swimming and relaxing
http://www.eurogym.at/index.php?option= ... Itemid=168
The above is nice in the summer so I am told because of the lawn (Liegewiese) outside. It is just opposite the Russian church across the railway.
I pay 45 Euros (it seems that was negotiable) per month and can make use of a variety of different clubs. I mainly go to Floridsdorf, have inspected the club in Landstrasse once and am planning to pay the one at Imperial Hotel near Rennweg a visit soon.
The location in Wien Döbling has been opened recently and is said to be the largest and nicest so far.
