Steel rims or alloys with your winter tyres

I got a set of winter tyres on steel rims with my new car however I have the option to upgrade them to alloys for €40 per corner.
Now alloys do look much nicer than steel rims, however a lot of people have advised against using them but can't really say why!!!
The main reason I get is the price but €160 isn't so bad for a full set of alloy wheels!!!
Are there other reasons to get steel rims over alloys?

I have my winter tyres on stell rims.
A reason I could think of; when there is heaps of snow and you can't see the side curb you could easily damage your alloys. (?)
