Need A Heads Up On Finding Music-Friendly Bar/Lounge?
Hi guys newbie here..Wife and i have been living in vienna for about 6 months. I'm American and the wife's from Austria. I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this difficult question as i am assuming this site is mostly family oriented but perhaps there are expats in buisness in vienna or someone-might-know-something as it were.
So here goes..I've been tossing around an idea for a bar/lounge for a while. The biggest hurdle in this city has been that whatever commerical property you are interested in renting will have upstairs/sideways residential neighbours and therefore playing music after 10pm (and playing it really, really low at that) will be out of the question.
I dont know if anyone's noticed but this city is virtually devoid of any music coming from MOST commercial establishments, and i am including bars/most music shops (minus the regular established clubs and the whimpering sound that comes out of tiny speakers in many music shops in this city"music") and the basic mom and pop retail outlets etc.etc. I'm not looking to ghetto-blast, just play some classy stuff after 10pm.
YES i know its a city full of old, conservative geezers and many are basically knocked out by 10pm but there must be some place in this city to play music well after 10pm.
Dont get me wrong, its no problem finding a bar or venue for lease..this city is full of "places to let", but the minute you add music to the equation then all bets are off.
NO i cannot afford a soundproof bar/club nor can i afford to rent one of the proffesional super-clubs. I am looking to lease a small cozy place i can serve beer and wine but music is an absolute essential part of it.
oh..and no, i dont want to lease something in the sticks either..driving for something more than a few minutes is considered a "major undertaking" to many here.
Anyway i think this gives you the basic idea of my dilemma..any advice if appreciated

PS i want to avoid dealing with property agents for the obvious reason as i dont want to fork out the finders fee..a basement type venue or a place that has no neighbours on top or side..but that seems wishfull thinking from where i'm standing.

Re: Need A Heads Up On Finding Music-Friendly Bar/Lounge?
I hear ya, our neighbours cause us so much shit with music after 10.....
I can understand completely people not wanting loud music when they are trying to sleep, so why live above a pub/club ?
Anybody I know looking for a venue to lease try to go for a basement for the music with either another bar or a retail unit above, but good luck finding them without a makler.
BTW, being an auslander, you'll probably get a tougher time from any neighbours.......

yea..its going to be a bi#*h trying to find a basement space..and even then you probably have to convert to bar with additional expense..i will try without a broker for a few weeks and see what happens, i found our flat without a broker so it may still be possible..but whatever i find, i will need to make sure i can play music..i too wouldnt want to be tangled up with residential neighbours living up or sideways...it must be the rarest thing in vienna, to be able to deploy music...lord knows this city needs it like no other city i've been to.
