American married to EEA citizen Immigration

Postby elivik » Fri May 04, 2012 7:31 am

So, I've scowered the forums, and I'm not finding the answers to my questions.

Starting with me, I'm EEA, no worries, easy immigrating.
I understand that I only have to register my meldezettel with a magistrat within 3 days, and then within 3 months I need to get my Anmeldebescheinigung. Which one of these gives me an austrian I.D? For getting a phoneline, internet, apartment etc.

However, for my American husband, I am confused. I THINK that he will also have to get the meldezettel within 3 days, but then we start the application process for his residence permit.

On the bottom of this page: http://www.wien.gv.at/english/administr ... l#document
It seems all we have to do is apply for an aufenhaltskarte, with no quota, and he's got a residence permit for the next 10 years? Am I crazy? Dreaming? Is it really THAT easy?

Anyone try this before?

I believe you will also have to have an officially translated birth and marriage certificate for him. Here is a court sworn translator:

Ahh anyway, to answer your question, yes he should register, and then you start the process to apply. You will not get a 10 year pass, probably 1 year, 1 year, 3 years etc assuming he matches the criteria. eg. proof of income, health insurance etc etc
You can probably search for the word residence here to get old discussions about it

Thanks guys!

Luvbeers, is that also where I can get the "apostille" that everyone is talking about?

WienA, You wouldn't happen to know what the health insurance requirements are?
I've been looking in to getting him some really affordable travel insurance. It covers medical emergencies and unexpected things, but not trips to the doctor for hemorrhoid creams or athletes foot. Naa mean?

The apostille you get on your birth certificate before you leave the states.

Well then you will need to send it to the state department and they will send it back. I think to here: http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/

Wonderful! Thank you! I feel a little lost in all the things I apparently don't know that I need to do.

On a nicer note, I just started drinking again. So, I'll be good and ready for the Austrian summer.
