Holly Martins arrives at Westbahnhof (U3, U6), although of course there is nothing of note to see there at the moment, given the fact that it is currently a building site about to become a shopping centre, and of course Anna Schmidt also leaves from the Westbahnhof. Harry Lime’s apartment, which is apparently at Stiftgasse 15, is in actual fact at Josefsplatz 5, in the Palais Pallavicini (close to the Staatsoper, Sacher and Café Mozart (see below)). Stiftgasse 15 is more or less opposite the entrance of the Bundesheer Stift-Kaserne in the 7th district (U3 Neubaugasse) and not actually of any great individual note - best combined with a trip to the Spittelberg (e.g. for beers at the Siebensternbräu). Major Callaway who Martins meets at Lime’s funeral arranges his accommodation at Hotel Sacher - one of Vienna’s most famous luxury hotels, just behind the State Opera House on the corner of Kärntnerstrasse and Philharmonikerstrasse (Karlsplatz/Oper U1, U2 and U4). Near to Hotel Sacher there is also Café Mozart on Albertinaplatz, where Martins meets Kurtz, although the filming was in fact conducted on Tegetthofstrasse at the Neuer Markt. Café Mozart is however of interest since Graham Greene wrote some of the book and was a regular. Anna Schmidt stars in the Josefstadt Theatre - in the 8th district (the 2 tram goes out along Josefstädterstrasse from the Ring, when it branches off by the parliament). Over sixty years after the film was made it is of course only natural that some places can not be seen as they were. The Casanova Revue Bar closed several years ago and is now a Köö pool café, but the façade still remains on Dorotheergasse (U1/U3 Stephansplatz/City). Similarly, the Reichsbrücke, on which Winkel, Kurtz, Popescu and “The Third Man” meet up is now a different bridge. The suspension bridge in the film collapsed in the 1970s, and there is now a more modern bridge. Harry Lime finally is seen in the ornate doorway of Schreyvogelgasse 8 (Tram 1 or D, Rathaus) , in the 1st district (can be easily combined with a trip to Café Landtmann, to the Rathausplatz if there is an event on or to Molly Darcey's pub). Lime then hotfoots it to Am Hof, although there is no central kiosk concealing the entrance to the sewers - that was just a film prop. Martins meets with Lime on Vienna’s iconic Riesenrad at the entrance of the Prater (U1, U2 Praterstern). Lime’s disappearance into the sewers is from the Hoher Markt, where you can also visit the Ankeruhr, although it is not in the film. As a tribute you can always visit Limes Restaurant on the Hoher Markt - inspired by the film, although again not appearing in the film itself. And of course, for the Third Man connoisseur, who wants to see the film in the cinema in Vienna, there is the possibility of doing so at the Burgkino, where there are showings in their Studiokino on Friday nights and in the higher season, also on Saturdays and Sundays at 4:30pm or on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Also, the Third Man Private Collection or Third Man Museum is a private museum open on Saturdays from 2-6pm or on Thursday evenings by appointment from 6pm and is on Pressgasse 25, in the 4th district. (U4 Kettenbrückengasse).

Recently a friend came to visit Vienna and put me on the spot to try and put together a tour of “Third Man” locations, in between trips to assorted watering holes around the city. Fortunately through a number of websites and some knowledgeable friends I was able to come up with most of the locations. The film begins with a funeral at the Zentralfriedhof on the Simmeringer Hauptstrasse (either take the 71 tram from Schwarzenbergplatz or from the end of the U3 in Simmering). The Zentralfriedhof is worth a visit in its own right - many famous Austrians’ last resting place is here.
